12-week Advanced Furniture Making

Course Dates

This course is for intermediate students wishing to develop existing skills to a professional standard. We ask that applicants have completed the 12-week Furniture Making/40 week Boat Building course or have equivalent training/experience from outside the BBA.

Explore woodworking techniques including furniture construction, steam-bending, CAD, project design/development, and business studies.

The last four weeks are devoted to producing a piece of furniture of your design under the course tutor’s expert guidance.

The course is run to simulate a commercial environment with an 8.30- 5.30 working day.

We aim to provide an environment for a steady pace of work and attention to detail, gradually building confidence and speed.

The facilities are the same as for the furniture making course but a greater degree of independence will be expected.

Regular reviews will be held with the instructor to discuss assessments of set piece projects.

This will include:

  • Wooden hand plane
  • Small dovetailed box
  • Steam-bent bookshelf
  • Low table
  • Wall-hung cabinet
  • Personal project piece

The course will take you through:

  • Advanced techniques in furniture construction including steam-bending, jig making and furniture construction
  • Drawing, including an introduction to CAD
  • Project design and development working towards the final piece
  • Business studies relating to small commercial workshop operation

The design-and-make project should be no bigger than the benchtop and aims to display a consistent approach to design and exacting craftsmanship. It will be developed through the initial phases of the course using sketches, models and mock-ups through to full-size drawings. It will also include project planning and costing. Four weeks allows for a concentrated time to make a gallery standard piece. This together with your set pieces means you will leave with a portfolio of work.

Course Fee

The 2022 fee for the 12 week Advanced Furniture Making course is £6,150 plus the cost of the materials for your personal project piece.

Students benefit from the good discounts we receive from our suppliers. All pieces you produce other than the personal project piece are included in the fee.

A 5% discount of the course fee will be awarded to anyone who has previously enrolled on the 12 week Furniture Making course.

Bursary assisted places are available for this course.
